Town of Sterzing - Historical Buildings
Noble Residence between Renaissance and Baroque
Residence Schwalbenegg is one of Sterzing’s historic noble residences and recalls the period when wealthy local families achieved social advancement through trade, administration and mining. Like many historic residences in Sterzing, the building combines bourgeois residential culture with representative architecture and aristocratic prestige.
The residence is closely connected to Hans Selauer, a member of a respected Sterzing family. In 1538 he was ennobled and granted the noble title “von Schwalbenegg”, which was subsequently transferred to the residence itself. The building thus became a visible symbol of social advancement and of the emerging urban nobility of Renaissance Tyrol.
The present Baroque appearance of the residence dates back to a major reconstruction carried out between 1720 and 1730. During this period, many of Sterzing’s older merchant and noble houses were redesigned according to Baroque taste, with more elegant façades and representative living spaces. Residence Schwalbenegg was likewise adapted to the new style while preserving its historical character.
Behind its walls were once reception rooms, service areas and administrative spaces. The residence therefore reflects the close connection between commerce, administration and social advancement in Sterzing’s history. Wealthy families shaped not only the economy of the town but also its architectural appearance.
Today, Residence Schwalbenegg recalls the era of Sterzing’s economic prosperity and the families who, through wealth and imperial favour, rose from respected citizens to members of the nobility. Balancing Renaissance origins with Baroque elegance, the building tells a story of prestige, social transformation and the historical importance of Sterzing within Tyrol.
