Symbol of Sterzing and the Medieval Town<\/strong><\/p>

Rising in the heart of Sterzing\u2019s historic old town, the Twelve Tower is the city\u2019s most famous landmark and one of the most important Late Gothic structures in South Tyrol. For centuries, the imposing tower has dominated the skyline and recalled the period when Sterzing was one of Tyrol\u2019s leading trading and mining towns.<\/p>

The tower was built between 1468 and 1472 according to plans by the Sterzing master builder Hans Feur. It was erected on the site of the former Upper Town Gate and became the monumental connection between the old and the new parts of the town. The construction reflected the prosperity and civic pride of Sterzing\u2019s citizens during the city\u2019s economic golden age.<\/p>

At around 46 metres high, the Twelve Tower still rises above the rooftops of Sterzing today. Its name comes from the great bell that rang every day at noon. For centuries, the tower regulated daily life in the town by announcing market hours, assemblies, dangers and important events, making it both the symbolic and acoustic centre of civic life.<\/p>

Architecturally, the tower is regarded as one of the finest examples of Tyrolean Late Gothic architecture. Particularly distinctive is the present tower top with its stepped gable. However, this structure was only added after the great fire of 1868, which destroyed the original Gothic spire.<\/p>

The Twelve Tower served not only as a representative monument, but also for many years as the headquarters of the town fire watch. From here, fires could be detected early and alarms raised \u2014 a vital task in the densely built medieval town.<\/p>

Even today, anyone passing beneath the tower walks through the same historic gateway once used by merchants, travellers and wagons moving along the Brenner route. The Twelve Tower therefore tells not only the story of architecture and urban history, but also of Sterzing\u2019s historical importance as a connection between northern and southern Europe.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
